Description

Based on Luke 10:38-42

Length: 5-7 minutes

Mary and Martha – a skit for 5 people (plus a small crowd – non-speaking parts).

Martha is so busy entertaining and trying to make sure everything is perfect that she’s stressing herself out. It’s not that her hospitality isn’t appreciated; she just made it more important than the main event – which was Jesus.  He didn’t mind Martha using her gift of hospitality until she demanded that the Lord make Mary leave her place at His feet to help Martha serve.

EXERPT:

NARRATOR #1
Well, somebody has to feed all those people, right?

[NARRATOR #2 NODS AND SHRUGS IN AGREEMENT]

NARRATOR #1 [CONTINUES]: Martha is so busy entertaining and trying to make sure everything is perfect that she’s stressing herself out. It’s not that her hospitality isn’t appreciated; she just made it more important than the main event – which was Jesus. He didn’t mind Martha using her gift of hospitality UNTIL she demanded that Mary leave her place at His feet to help serve.

NARRATOR #2: Did you notice that even after Martha accused the Lord of not caring about her and demanding that He tell Mary to help her, Jesus was still merciful to her. He didn’t embarrass her in front of the guests. Even though she was kind of rude, he politely told her that Mary had made the better choice and it would not be taken from her. Our God is full of mercy, grace, and great patience.

NARRATOR #1: Indeed. Martha had good intentions, but she forgot that serving is an act of humility, not a demand to place on others. The Lord loved Martha. He knew she had a servant’s heart, and he probably enjoyed her cooking. I bet that sister could throw down in the kitchen. But, He also loved Mary who had a different personality. The Bible says he loved Martha, Mary and their brother Lazarus, who Jesus had raised from the dead.

NARRATOR #2: Martha means well; she just needs to relax and let the Lord feed her bread from heaven.

[NARRATORS WALK OVER TO JOIN MARTHA. THEY ALL SMILE AT EACH OTHER AS THEY LISTEN TO JESUS TOGETHER.]
