EXCERPT – 1

Ashley:       [TEXTING ON HER CELL PHONE]  Have you seen the new girl?

Monique:   No.  What is she like?

Ashley:       [NODS HER HEAD IN THE DIRECTION OF NEW GIRL]  She looks poor… like she wears hand me down’s.

Monique:   What’s her name?

Ashley:       [SHRUGGING]  Who knows?  Who cares?

Monique:   Well, it just seems like if you’re going to talk about her, you should at least know something about her.  And, if she looks like she wears hand me downs, it might be nice if you offered her some of those designer clothes you are about to throw out.  Wouldn’t that be the Christian thing to do instead of insulting her?

Ashley:       [STILL ON THE PHONE]  Whatever.

Monique:   Well, I’m going to introduce myself to her.  Are you coming?

Ashley:       Whatever. [STILL ON PHONE, BUT FOLLOWS ALONG]

Monique:   [APPROACHES THE NEW GIRL]  Hi.  My name is Monique, and this is Ashley.  What’s your name?

New Girl:   Grace.  It’s nice to meet you.

Ashley::      Whatever. [STILL TEXTING ON PHONE – ACTING UNINTERESTED]

Monique:   Don’t worry about Ashley.  She’s self-absorbed … So, Grace…that’s an interesting name.

New Girl:   Yes, it means “favor” and “blessings”

Ashley:       [UNDER HER BREATH-WITHIN HEARING]  You sure don’t dress like it.

New Girl:   [SWEETLY]  Excuse me, Ashley, but beauty comes from within.  My clothes don’t make me.  Can I ask you a question Ashley?

Girl #1:      [SIGH] Sure.  [STILL ON PHONE]

New Girl:   Are you a Christian?

Ashley:       Yeah.  I go to church every Sunday and I’m on the praise team, too. Thank you very much.

New Girl:   Do you read the Bible or attend Sunday school?

Ashley:       [LOOKS UP FROM PHONE-SPEAKS WITH AN INDIGNANT TONE] What business is it of yours?

New Girl:   I’m just trying to find common ground Ashley.
